Rome Trip, Yrs 5 & 6, March 2019

Date: 4th April 2019
“What one learns in a classroom is just a very small part of the learning process.  The real learning starts when one crosses borders and travels miles for the real knowledge.”  Vivek Sahni

From the 25th – 29th of March, students from Yrs 5 & 6 went on a trip to Rome, accompanied by their class teachers and Mr. Benedykt. This is what Ms Maria said:

“One of the best parts of teaching in an international school is being able to provide opportunities for children that extend thinking and understanding beyond the classroom setting.  As educators, we understand the value of providing learning opportunities for our children that put real situations, people and materials in the hands of young learners so they can fully experience learning on another level.  As families who choose an international school for their children, you are unique in your broader understanding of the importance of being international and providing unique opportunities for your young ones.

Year 5 and Year 6 have just returned from a week in Rome, Italy as part of their IPC Unit The Great, The Bold and The Brave. The unit emphasises the importance of learning about ancient Greek and Roman civilisations to understand the organisation of governments, the adaption and structure of modern cities, and to appreciate the development of cultural foundations of societies in the form of art, drama, and music.

During our week in Rome, pupils were able to walk along the world’s first road, Via Appia Antica, step inside the former palaces and temples of Roman Emperors and learn about the lives of slaves and Gladiators who were so vital to the daily life of Romans. Pupils also enjoyed modern pleasures such as pizza, pasta and gelato!  We walked around historic sites and sketched beautiful vistas of the city from parks and structures.  Though our unit will last for another 6 weeks, the memories of this journey and the moments with friends will last a lifetime.”
