Years 5 and 6 recently read the novel, Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz Ryan. As a culmination to the novel study, the kids held an “Esperanza Day.” They planned a great event and invited their Year 1 and 2 book buddies to share in the learning and fun.
Years 5 and 6 created and performed skits that retold the story of the novel and explained some of the historical references (Mexican Revolution/Great Depression/US Repatriation). They also
wanted to provide a few traditional Mexican snacks from the novel, so they learned how to make pepinos, guacamole, and more.
Students went shopping for the supplies and prepared the food. Their friends in Years 1 and 2 loved the snacks! The finale of the day was the amazing piñata that the students created and filled with candies!
